First
of all, a huge thank you to the teachers that share their faith and encourage
our children to begin and enrich their own faith journeys as they learn about
God with us each week. Another huge thank you to Jane Holland for
leading us in song each Sunday.
Sunday
School for 2009 followed the Gospel Light’s “Fruit of the Spirit” curriculum,
which continues in 2010. This 52 lesson curriculum focused on Bible
stories, games and project, if time. Sunday School began at 10:00, with
singing and prayer altogether and then children were divided into grade level
classrooms. We had 27 students register for Sunday School in September,
with the greatest number being in the three and four year old class.
Fourth
graders received their first Holy Communion on June 21st.
They were Cameron George, Kelli Lamphere and Reese Matheson.
Vacation Bible School
ran the week of June 15th through June 19th.
There were 31 children. The theme was “SonRock Kids Camp”, which was
published by Gospel Light. Children had fun spending a week “at camp”,
learning about being accepted by Jesus, protected by Jesus, saved by Jesus,
forgiven by Jesus and living by Jesus. We held V.B.S. during the afternoon,
again this summer. Students were met at the Elementary School at noon,
walked down to the Church, served lunch and then began the activities. This
format has seemed to work well the past two summers. We had many great
teachers and helpers that made the program tons of fun for all! Thanks
to those that donated food, supplies, and especially their time. We
appreciated it! The program was presented to the congregation during an
outside service on June 21st.
Children
worked hard to prepare and present the Christmas program on December 20th.
Thank you to all that brought treats and those that helped with this
program. A huge thank you goes to Jane Holland for her time and talent
with this program and especially thank you to the children for a wonderful
treat!
Looking
ahead to 2010, Sunday School will continue from 10:00 until 10:45. We
will be hopefully welcoming a few new faces to teach Sunday School and are
hoping to continue to grow in numbers as we learn and grow in our
faith. We would like to welcome Jen Brattlie and Jen Lees as our new
Education Committee co-chairs.
In
closing, we’d like to thank everyone that has helped with Sunday School and
other programs involving our children. Thank you for your time,
supplies, funds, prayers, energy, patience, food, etc. Please know we
appreciate all you do and we are grateful for you!
Sincerely,
Elizabeth
Tebon
Fellowship: Fellowship
Committee Annual Report 2009
The Fellowship Committee this year
continued meaningful fellowship time following services. Our success
has been due to the support of many members who provided treats, often in
honor of a special occasion in the life of a member. A special thank you to
MARGE PETERS and ROBERTA FRY who set up the coffee pot for Sunday morning and
to PASTOR LARRY for final set up on Sunday. A heartfelt thanks to all
who have hosted a Coffee Fellowship and an invitation for everyone to
consider volunteering to continue offering treats for this fellowship time by
signing up on the OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE BOARD.
The Committee has also been in charge of
the Lenten Supper organization, Name Tag Sundays, and the Christmas
decorating.
Public Relations are a very important
part of this committee’s responsibilities. The Independent has
been very helpful in publishing the various articles and pictures about the
activities we have happening at Deerfield
Lutheran Church.
The website for the church continues to be kept up to date. Again, thank you
to RHONDA PERRY who is there for help and consulting about the site. If you
have not done so, check out the website: http://www.deerfieldelca.org. Weekly and Special events, devotions, articles of
interests, and also links to send messages to Pastor Sexe or Laura Connor and
yes, Gilbert and Stephanas are available! This year we added a DLCEcho
Blog which has a link on the website. This Blog tells of events that
have happened at DLC and has many pictures of those in attendance.
The Prayer Shawl Ministry, practiced
in many churches throughout the world, continues as a part of the ministry at
Deerfield Lutheran. This ministry continues to help those in need of comfort,
love, and hope to those in our own community; lap robes have been added for
those confined to a wheelchair. Thank you to the women who put in many
hours providing this ministry. There is a need for donations to help
with the cost of yarn for this important project. Those who have made
the shawls and lap robes are PHYLLIS RUDE, BEA ALLEN, ARLENE FAHLING, ARLYS
KRAVIK, and others. Twenty shawls/lap robes have been given to members
of our community throughout the year. We ask if anyone knows of
someone who could use the warmth of this ministry to let the church office or
Debbie Sexe know.
The work of the Fellowship Committee
members PHYLLIS RUDE and ROBERTA FRY is very much appreciated.
Respectfully Submitted, Debra Holder-Sexe, Chairperson
Finance: 2009
Finance Committee
Thank you to Bill Peters, Eugene Halverson,
Mark Ziety and Arlyn Turnquist for their contributions to the finance
committee in 2009. The committee had a challenging year in 2009 much
due to the current economic conditions which had an effect on church
finances. Periodically throughout the year transfers were needed from
estate memorials to cover expenses and pay bills. Significant funds
still remain in the memorials.
The committee also believes that the HELP
project is a significant and important project for the church. A
recommendation was made by the finance committee to commit $15,000 from
the Schimming-Workman and Borgerud memorials as matching funds to be
used towards the HELP project. This recommendation was subsequently
approved by church council.
The finance committee also put significant
thought and consideration to the 2010 budget. Changes and adjustments
were made to reduce the budget from 2009 levels.

Music
& Worship: Worship & Music Committee
Report 2009
Through Worship we express and learn more about our
spirituality. This group is committed to helping enhance the worship
experience for the entire congregation.
Deerfield Lutheran
Church continues to offers two weekly
services to meet the needs of our congregation:
·
Sunday 9:00 am -
offering a blend of traditional and contemporary worship
·
Wednesday 6:00 pm
offers worship often using the Holden Evening Prayer service
Thank you to all Worship Assistants and Musicians who
share their varied talents to enhance our worship services. DLC was sorry to
accept the resignation of Matt Jorgenson from Director of Music in February
and from Senior Choir Director in June. Gina Jorgenson also resigned from
accompanist/pianist in June. We wish the Jorgenson’s all the best with their
future plans and growing family.
During the summer months we were blessed to have the
musical talents of Angie Williams added as pianist/vocalist. In the fall she
accepted the position of Senior Choir Director and we are pleased with her
leadership. Appreciation also goes out to Jeff Quamme who continues to lead
and share the talents of the Handbell Choir at least once per month, and to
students, adults and visitors who have provided special music through the
year. The regular (and amusing) visits from Gilbert and Stephanas are always
enjoyed by all ages here at DLC.
We are blessed to have Lois Anderson (organist), Jane
Holland (guitarist), and Angie Williams (pianist) enhancing our worship
services. Their flexibility and talents are greatly appreciated!
During Lent we again enjoyed our Mid Week Soup
Suppers. Our Lenten services were enhanced with Special Music, Dramas
and the use of the Holden Evening Prayer. We continue to alternate Good
Friday services with St. Paul Liberty Lutheran as well as one summer
opportunity for fellowship with them at the combined outdoor Sunday service at
the festival grounds.
During Advent we held a Dedication for the Digital
Carillon. We enjoyed hearing Advent/Christmas bell music from the Carillon
during communion in that Worship service.
The Advent Brunch was put on this year by the Youth
Mission Team who donated half of their proceeds to the “HELP” Elevator Fund
and the Handbell Choir offered special music as the entertainment portion of
the morning.
This committee is also conducting a fundraiser for the “HELP”
fund by offering the purchase of Hymnals donated in Memory/Honor of loved
ones. Each hymnal is $20 and will be labeled accordingly. This will continue
for several months and forms are available in the Narthex or by contacting
the church office.
In closing I would like to thank the 2009 committee
members; Pastor Larry Sexe, Rachel Haag, Sharon Berge, Lois Anderson, Cheri
& Dave Lemke, Jane Holland and Matt Jorgenson. Their diligence, talents
and ideas are always appreciated.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve on this committee.

Outreach:
2009 OUTREACH COMMITTEE REPORT
The year began with a coordinated effort with the Fellowship
Committee to reach out to worshipers after worship service, by placing the
coffee and treat table in a more friendly area of the Narthex. This simple
change proved to be a successful positive approach for fellowship.
In attempt to have visitors sign guest book, it was
requested that the guest book be moved closer to Pastor so as visitors leave
the sanctuary, Pastor acknowledges them and asks to sign book.
Opened “Grandma’s Attic” for children to shop for Mom,
Grandma, or that special Aunt for Mother’s Day. This event which
included shopping, (all gently used items were priced at .25 cents) and free
wrapping was well attended during the two day event.
Delivered meals to those who were unable to attend the
annual ice cream social and chicken dinner. In addition, others
throughout the year who returned home from surgery, birth of a baby or other
illness throughout the year.
Approximately 58 letters were sent to invite parents to a
“get to know one another” reception on Rally Sunday during Sunday School
registration.
Created a letter for mailing to visitors who came to
worship at Deerfield Lutheran. This welcome letter included
opportunities that may be of interest to possible new members.
For a HELP (help elevator lift people) fundraiser, the
Outreach Committee made home made items and sold during the Advent Brunch and
Sunday following.
Thank you to Mary Turnquist, Nola Sorenson, and Debby
Haberkorn for all your help and dedication.

Property: PROPERTY COMMITTEE 2009 REPORT
I'd like to thank my committee members for their time and
efforts in 2009, and in particular Jerry Schultz who has helped me on so many
occasions. Other committee members include Doug Storms, Rod Emmerich, Dave
Lemke, Gary Borgrud and Joe Becker. Budget constraints contributed to having
to postpone this past summer's maintenance until 2010, to the exterior of the
church structure. I'd like to thank Floyd Winchel, with the help of Jerry
Schultz, for the exceptional work they did to make the classroom
floors a thing of beauty. In addition to his time, Floyd donated all
the materials in what amounts to the finishing touch to earlier updating of
our classrooms. Thanks and appreciation the Steve Neath and family for their
excellent work with keeping the church lawn always looking trimmed and very
neat. They also contributed and put down shredded bark around
the shrubbery. And finally a sincere thanks to Russ Peacock for his
labor installing a new furnace for the classrooms. We continue to be
fortunate in having quality people who are so willing to help.
Respectively Submitted,

Stewardship:
2009 Annual Report
Fifth Sunday
offerings for 2009 went to support ELCA World Hunger, Jail Ministry, Lutheran
Social Services, and Lutherdale.
A big thank you
to Laura Connor, Rebecca Ziety, and Deb Sexe for helping with the Stewardship
drip mailing in the fall. The purpose was to continue the financial
aspect of stewardship, strengthen the time and talent message, and display an
attitude of gratitude for the gifts so far.

Mission: Mission Team Committee 2009 Annual Report
A small group of teens went to Minneapolis accompanied by Arlyn Turnquist
in the spring. They spent a weekend serving others.
The teen mission team is preparing for a mission trip
this summer. Kari Sexe is leading the group and organizing the team building
meetings. On 3/19/10 they are planning a major fundraiser for the
mission team. It will be a “Deerfield Has Talent” event with a meal
served. Right now the team is recruiting talent to perform at the event. And
collecting prizes for a silent auction to be held in conjunction with the
event.
I’d like to issue another big thanks to all who supported
our mission teams from Deerfield
Lutheran Church.
Becoming the hands and feet of Christ to those in need, can be as complex as
traveling with a group to pound nails in a hurricane devastated area to
donating a silent auction prize or manning a table selling tickets for an
event. Each person who supports the missions in our congregation is in
their own way serving those in need. Not everyone has the time or
resources to travel with a mission team to directly serve the needy, but by
donating funds or time to those who can serve on a mission team you are
serving those in need indirectly. I’d like to thank all those who have
directly or indirectly supported the needy in our world through Deerfield
Lutheran missions.
Thanks for the opportunity to help coordinate mission
teams from our congregation. It has been very rewarding.
