Revival Choir

As the new Youth and Family Ministry Coordinator and Senior Choir Director, I would like to invite the youth of the church to begin the year in our new youth choir called “Revival Choir.”  Since Pastor Larry has been here, there has never been a youth choir, so we are excited to see these changes taking place to get students more involved in the music ministry and worship aspects of this church!!

Most of your parents would know me as Gina Witkowski.  My husband and I are both former music teachers.  I have choreographed (made and taught dances for) the Deerfield High School Show Choir for the past 9 years, and choreographed 10 (some competitive, some not) show choirs in the La Crosse area for the past 5 years.  I was in a group called the KIDS from Wisconsin for 5 summers (a professional show choir), and I was given a scholarship to sing solos with UW-L’s top jazz band in Germany and France.  I also was given a scholarship to play piano for UW-L’s top choir in England and Scotland.  As you can see, I have done lots of cool stuff, and I hope to use what I have learned to make Revival Choir a fun and rewarding experience.

Some of you are involved in school choirs, and some of you are not.  However, this will be a different type of experience for you.  We will be singing gospel pieces – those that make the congregation want to stand up, clap their hands, and shout “Hallelujah” – as well as contemporary Christian rock songs.  We will try some with harmony, and some without.  We will try a few pieces with sign language or dance (for those who are brave), and even do some special pieces for special services.  And we will never make you sing a solo (unless you absolutely want to).

Ok, so I know you’re thinking “how much time do I have to put in at church a week – I already go to religious ed. on Wednesdays and services on Sundays.  Well, you only have to commit to 30 extra minutes a week than you would normally be at church.  We will rehearse from 6:45 to 7:15 on only those Wednesday nights you have K.A.I.R. or confirmation classes unless otherwise planned.

Ok, I know some of you are also thinking, “I can’t sing.  I have never been able to sing.  I will never be able to sing.”  You know what?  Who cares?!!  You weren’t perfect at walking, riding a bicycle, or bouncing a basketball the first time you tried those things either – but you learned.  And even if you’re not perfect at those things, or at singing, God doesn’t care, and neither do I!  All I ask is that you try it.  If you try it for a month and you’re still not having any fun, then we’ll talk about it!

If you are interested, we will meet together for the first time on September 19th.  I hope to see you there!!

Musically,

Prayer Shawl Ministry

The Prayer Shawl Ministry, practiced in many churches throughout the world, is now part of the ministry at Deerfield Lutheran. It is a way to send a message of our love, hope and comfort to those in Biloxi, Mississippi who survived Hurricane Katrina.  Currently over twenty shawls, knit or crocheted, will be sent to Biloxi. They are now on display in the church and will be blessed on Sunday, May 20th.  This ministry will be continuing to help those in need of comfort, love, and hope to those in need.
