Children’s Ministry at

Deerfield Lutheran Church

Gilbert, The Lion of Faith, and Stephanas, The Clown of Life, are a very important part of our ministry at Deerfield Lutheran Church. Normally part of our 10:45 a.m. family oriented worship service. Gilbert & Stephanas in their own imaginative way bring the good news of Jesus to our youngest worshippers.

Gilbert & Stephanas talk about Feeding The 5000

Steph: Good morning boys and girls.  Are you hungry?  I sure am.  Sometimes I get really hungry during worship.

Gil: Good morning Stephanas, good morning boys and girls.

Steph: Good morning Gilbert.  Are you hungry?

Gil: Well now that you mention it, I suppose I could eat something.

Steph: Good.  Instead of our usual puppet play, let's have a little snack.  I brought a bag with my snack in it.  Let's see what's here.

Gil: What have you got in there Stephanas?

Steph: Just a few tiny fish crackers.  That's it.

Gil: Hummm. That reminds me of something that happened to Jesus and his disciples one day.

Steph: Well, since we don't have a snack we might as well have a story.

Gil: Jesus was very tired and went away to a quiet place to rest.  He got into a boat and went to what his disciples thought was a deserted place, but when they got there a crowd of people had already gathered.  There were 5000 men PLUS women and children.

Steph: That's a lot of people.

Gil: It sure is.  And this large crowd wanted Jesus to teach them about the Kingdom of God and to heal their sick.  Jesus needed to rest, but when he saw the people, he loved them so much, he forgot about himself and taught them all about God's Kingdom and healed their sick.

Steph: Jesus really does love us, doesn't he Gilbert?

Gil: Yes he does.  Well returning to our story.  After a long day of teaching and healing it was time to eat.  The disciples wanted Jesus to send the people away so that they could get something to eat.  But Jesus said, they don't need to go away.  You give them something to eat.

Steph: Woo.  No way are they going to be able to feed that many hungry people.

Gil: That's what the disciples thought.  They told Jesus all they could come up with was what one small boy had brought along as his snack - 5 small loaves of bread and a couple fish.

Steph: So what did they do?

Gil: Jesus told them to bring him the small boy's little snack and to ask everyone to sit down on the grass and he took the loaves and fish and looked up to heaven and gave thanks.  He then gave the food to the disciples to give to the people.

Steph: And they had to feed 5000?  That would be even harder than trying to use my two tiny fish crackers to give the boys and girls a snack.

Gil: I suppose it was, Stephanas, but the Bible says that that everyone ate until they were full, and they even had left overs, enough to fill 12 baskets.

Steph: That's awesome!

Gil: What do you think we can learn from this story, Stephanas?

Steph: When we give what we have to God He can do more than we ever imagined possible.

Gil: We may not have much, yet little becomes more than enough when we turn it over to God.

Steph: Jesus used a small boy's lunch to feed more than 5000 people.  I'd like to ask God to use the people here today, including the boys and girls, to bless everyone they meet.

Gil: Very good Stephanas.  And do you still want to share your snack?

Steph: I guess so.  Wooah !!!  Where did all these fish crackers come from?

Gil: The Lord provides, Stephanas, the Lord always provides.
