CAMBODIAN TRIP AND WORK

Cambodia is my homeland, a small beautiful country in Southeast Asia.  Cambodia suffered a terrible civil war that began in 1970 and ended in 1975.  At that time the Communists (Khmer Rouge) under Pol Pot took over Cambodia and ruled for almost four years.  During that terrible time many innocent Cambodians lost their lives.  Many died from overwork, starvation, torture, illness and lack of medications; I myself lost two of my brothers and my younger sister under this Communist regime.  As many as three million Cambodians were killed at this time, but no one knows for sure how many died.

In November of 1978 the Vietnamese invaded Cambodia and installed a new Cambodian Government.  This government never made any attempt to improve the lives of their people, but only sought to enrich themselves at the expense of the Cambodian people.

The war left many ordinary citizens who must struggle day by day simply to survive under extreme poverty.  When I went back to Cambodia for the second time in 1999, my heart was filled with compassion for these struggling people.  Since then, I have wanted to do as much as I can to help them.

In January 2008, Chan and I went back to a remote area that has about 400 families.

They live far away from civilization.  They have no running water, wells, or electricity.  The only source of water available to them was a small stream located well over a mile away from their village.

We brought gifts to them such as medicines, school supplies, clothes, sandals, and food.  Of the people who came to receive gifts, many of them wore no shoes and many children wore only worn and torn clothing.

Thanks to your generosity and support we were able to offer much needed help.  Your prayers and gifts have helped to make this trip a successful one.

On Sunday, October 19, Chan and I will be showing a video we made on this last trip to Cambodia during the fellowship time.  We will share in greater detail what we have been able to do to help ordinary Cambodians with your generous support.  We will also share our plans of ways you can continue to support our efforts as we make plans to return to our homeland.

Thank you so very much!

Other Special Ministries at Deerfield Lutheran:

Prayer shawl ministry (NEW)

The Prayer Shawl Ministry, practiced in many churches throughout the world, is now part of the ministry at Deerfield Lutheran. It is a way to send a message of our love, hope and comfort to those in Biloxi, Mississippi who survived Hurricane Katrina.  Currently over twenty shawls, knit or crocheted, will be sent to Biloxi. They are now on display in the church and will be blessed on Sunday, May 20th.  This ministry will be continuing to help those in need of comfort, love, and hope to those in need.
